Dauphin Island Alabama

I’ve got to be the luckiest guy around.  Who else gets to go to one of their favorite places pretty often and get paid to do it?  I love this business.

It’s pretty obvious it’s around the first of the month.  Look at your calendar.  If you have been reading since I started the blog – and before I wiped out the previous blog – you know that business slows down quite a bit from the 1st to the 15th and we like it that way.  We work very long hours from the 15th to the end of each month.

I got up early to do a little programming and check my e-mail.  When that was done I picked up my route to see what my day looked like.  Two insurance loss inspections on Dauphin Island starting at 9:00am.  That’s all.  Looks like Vickie is having a little pity on me.   -sympathetic or kindly sorrow evoked by the suffering, distress, or misfortune of another, often leading one to give relief or aid or to show mercy

Hmmm.  What to do?

I thought seriously of taking a real limber glass fishing rod with an open face reel and try to catch a few speckled trout.  Speckled trout fishing is one of my favorite things to do.  Since it is a little late in the season I decided against it.  I chose instead my second favorite toy- cameras.

I was through with both inspections by 9:40am.  As usual, I went looking for things to see and people to meet.  I’ve included a picture of a bunch of oystermen out in the sound gathering oysters.

Those guys and gals, yes gals, work hard.  Oystering is entirely manual labor.  I applogize for the small picture.  I overdid the shrinking just a bit.  There were probably 50 or 60 oystermen at work.  I could only get this one picture while going across the bridge.

Here’s a picture of, believe it or not, Easter Island.  Of course it’s not the Easter Island, Rapa Nui, with the petroglyphs.  It is however, named Easter Island.Easter Island  It really is nothing more than a huge sandbar that at times is underwater.  It is a bit north of Dauphin Island, just as you start across the bridge to Dauphin Island.

When I was about ten years old, my family and I camped out on this island.  We had a tent and all the stuff you need to make yourself right at home on a little island.  Or so I thought!  I guess it doesn’t take a lot to impress a ten year old when camping out on an island.

Anyway, a pretty good storm came up about 3:00am.  My father had to help my sister, my Mom and I into our boat that got us there and ride it out!  There is no exaggeration when I say we lost everything – tent, clothes, food, coolers, lanterns – everything.  Luckily though we did get back to the mainland.

I have hundreds of more memories and stories about Dauphin Island – I lived on a boat docked at Dauphin Island - and I’m sure you will hear a lot of them over time; especially between the 15th of the month to about the 30th.

I also took a little video footage while on the island.  I will see if I get get posted for you.  All of you have a great day.
